Ph.D PROGRAMME

 

The Institute is conducting Ph.D Programme with recognition of Jawaharlal Nehru (JNU) University, New Delhi from the academic year 2023-24. The programme is open to those candidates who have qualified Junior Research Fellowship offered by the UGC, CSIR, DBT, etc. Students will be admitted through presentation of research synopsis and Viva-voce. The admitted students will be enrolled with JNU and Degree will be jointly awarded by the JNU and NIHFW.

 

ADMISSION PROCESS OF Ph.D COURSE

 

The programme is open to those candidates who have qualified Junior Research Fellowship offered by the UGC, CSIR, ICMR, DBT, AYUSH etc. Students will be admitted through presentation of Synopsis of Research Proposal and Viva-voce.

 

Admission to Employed status candidates: Candidates enjoying employed status and selected for admission shall be required to produce NOC and Leave Sanction Order prior to grant of admission for the course Ph.D. in NIHFW.

 

For the In-service candidates, written entrance test will be conducted by the Institute at the NIHFW. The NOC will be required by the Employer with assurance of study leave and continuation of salary. The candidates seeking admission to Ph.D. programme should be employed in a Government/UGC recognized Institutions/Organizations/University/ Colleges.

 

The admitted students for the Ph D Programme will be enrolled with JNU and Degree will be jointly awarded by the JNU and NIHFW. It is compulsory to attend the two semester coursework for all the enrolled Ph.D students. The Course work and the research work would be conducted at the NIHFW.

 

EVALUATION OF THESIS:  After completion of the Thesis, it will be evaluated by the JNU. The Thesis will be sent to panel of Examiners as per the JNU guidelines. Viva would be conducted by the JNU and PhD Degree will be awarded jointly by the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the NIHFW to those who successfully defend their PhD Viva.

 

TOTAL SEATS-The total number of seats under the PhD Programme is twelve (12). However, number may increase in case of exceptionally good candidates apply for the programme with fellowships. There will be 5 additional seats for the in-service candidates.

 

 

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION TO PHD PROGRAMME

 

Minimum Academic Qualifications--Applicants with M.B.B.S./M.D., MDS, MSc (Nursing), M. Pharm., MPH, MBA, M. A/M.Sc (Mathematics/Statistics/Operations Research). Master Degree in Epidemiology, Population Studies, Demography, Economics/Health Economics, Communication/Journalism, Education M.Sc. (Biochemistry, Bio-Technology); M.A. (Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work); Master Degree in AYUSH Systems of Medicine will be considered eligible for the admission in the Ph.D. programme.

 

  • At least 55% aggregate score or equivalent grade in Master’s degree are essential for the general category.
  • 5% relaxation in aggregate scores in Master’s degrees will be applicable for candidates from the reserved categories [(OBC (non-creamy layer; NCL), SC/ST, PwD and EWS].
  • Rounding off of percentage score to the next integral value is not permitted.
  • Candidates appearing for the final examination of the qualifying degree in the current academic year are eligible to apply; they will be admitted provisionally pending satisfactory fulfilment of the eligibility requirements at the time of joining.

In addition to the minimum educational qualification, the candidate must have qualified for Junior Research Fellowship of CSIR, UGC, ICMR, AYUSH, DBT, or any equivalent Fellowship offered by the Union/State Governments.

Span Period - Ph.D. programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including course work and a maximum of six years. Beyond permissible period, the JNU course guidelines will prevail.

MODE OF SELECTION/ SELECTION PROCEDURE

  • In addition to the minimum educational qualification, the candidate must have qualified for Junior Research Fellowship of CSIR, UGC, ICMR, AYUSH, DBT, or any equivalent Fellowship offered by the Union/State Governments.
  • National Fellowship on the basis of Lectureship/Assistant Professorship (without JRF) are not eligible. Candidates may make sure themselves that their JRF certificate must be valid at the time of physical verification of documents. Candidature will be rejected, if found, their JRF certificate not valid at the time of physical verification of the documents
  • After screening of the applications, candidates will be invited to present synopsis of research proposal and appear in the interview. Selection of candidates will depend on marks obtained based on presentation of a research proposal/synopsis followed by interview/viva.
  • Candidates selected will be enrolled for the joint Ph.D programme by the Jawaharlal Lal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi .
  • The In-service candidates may also apply for the admission. Their admission will be through written test at the NIHFW, presentation of Synopsis and interview subject to the submission of NOC and leave sanction from employer.
  • The Synopsis may contain topic, background, rationale/justification, objectives, methodology, expected outcomes.
  • The in service candidates seeking admission to Ph.D. programme should be employed in a Government/ UGC recognized Institutions/ Organizations/ University/ Colleges.
  • The Final merit list of admissions for the Ph.D. programmes under JRF will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in viva voce/interview including synopsis presentation. The candidates not appearing in the viva voce (wherever prescribed) are not eligible for being considered for admission to that programme of study for which they do not appear in the viva voce.
  • Candidates selected are required to block their seats within the time period after payment of requisite fee and uploading of required documents. Subsequently, the seats left vacant in each course will be offered to the candidates next in the merit list to block the remaining seats in order of the merit.
  • Institute reserves the right to extend date of admission in view of the vacant seats after the deadline.
  • The final selection will be done as per stipulated criteria for admission during physical verification of documents.
  • The Institute shall have all right to withdraw the admission of any candidate, if any discrepancy is found in the eligibility of the candidate. In case of any discrepancy, the Competent Authority will have rights to take the final decision.

Junior Research Fellowship to the awardees from CSIR JRF, UGC JRF, ICMR, DBT or and DST etc., may be availed as per rules of the respective funding agency.

 

RESERVATION OF SEATS

 

  • As per the UGC rules, 27% seats for OBC, 15% seats for SC, 7.5% seats for ST and 5% seats for person with disability (PWD) as per the reservation policy of the Government of India (with minimum disability to the extent of 40%) in pursuance of Provisions of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016.
  • Reservation of 5% seats in respect of PWD candidates shall be done horizontally, as per the Government of India Guidelines/Policy. a)
  • Reservation for EWS: The persons belonging to EWSs who are not covered under the scheme of reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs shall get 10% reservation in Admission to various programmes of study.
  • All SC/ST /OBC and EWS candidates are required to submit certificate in respect of their claims from the authorized officers as notified by the Government of India for the purpose from time to time.
  • The person with Disability (PWD) candidates are required to submit a certificate form authorized Medical Doctors/Hospitals indicating the extent of physical disability as per the Disability Act 2016. The percentage of disability is duly verified/recommended by the Chief Medical Officer /Medical Board of the University before the benefit is extended to the candidate.
  • Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS and General Category will be called for Viva-voce under their respective category at that stage.
  • The EWS vacant seats may be converted to unreserved seats with reference to DoPT letter dated 19.09.2022 (FAQs no. 13) as approved by Advisory Committee meeting dated 03.04.2023 and also approved in 162nd (A) meeting of Academic Council of JNU.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

 

The PhD program is an intensive full time program focusing on enhancing skills and abilities of students in research, management, problem solving, and critical thinking in the area of public health. The First year include classroom-based, face to face teaching, tutorials, practical (computer lab and public health activities in community), course work and synopsis preparation and presentation. The student needs to successfully complete the coursework and the Research work to be awarded the PhD degree.

Note:- Students need to pay for chemical/ reagents cost of laboratory separately for the RBM Department.

The onetime Library Deposit Fee and Security Deposit of Rs 10,000/- will be payable at the time of Admission which will be refundable after completion of course and submission of NOC by the student.
