National Skills lab - DAKSH at NIHFW was established on 9 March 2015 by Government of India in collaboration with LSTM, UK and the Maternal Health Division of MOHFW to upgrade the skills of health care providers such as ANMs/LHVs/SNs/MOs/nursing supervisors and faculty/obstetricians and paediatricians working at delivery points for providing quality RMNCH+A services. This training programme aims to reduce maternal and new-born mortality and morbidity by increasing availability and improving the quality of Skilled Birth Attendance (SBA) and Emergency Obstetric and New-born Care (EmONC). Skills Lab provides the opportunity for repetitive skills practice, simulation of clinical scenarios and training under the supervision of qualified trainers.

The Skills lab comprises of 4 skill stations and 1 Labour room where the trainees learn 35 Basic skills in 6 days of training through practicing skills on mannequins, simulation Exercises, demonstrations, role plays, videos and Presentations.

Areas in which training is imparted are Antenatal, Intra-natal, Postnatal & New-born care, Family Planning, infection Prevention, Management of Complications, adolescent counselling and other RMNCH + A Services.

The six days training is divided into:

1. Pre and Post training assessment of skills and knowledge of participants by administering OSCE & Questionnaire.

2. Demonstration & Theory sessions. Theory sessions are conducted by using videos and Power Point presentations. Skills sessions are demonstrated in Skill Stations by trainers on mannequins / equipment’s as per the standardized checklists. It is followed by practicing of skills by the trainees on mannequins under supervision of the trainers. By the end of each day, there is time for Supervised Skills Practice to learn any skill. The post training assessment is done and on the last day of training certificate are given to all participants.
